IBM, according to the New York Times, has now gone on the record to say that its current 3090J mainframes will be upgradable to Summit functionality. There was no elaboration, but the statement is no doubt intended to hustle 3090E and S users into upgrading their machines to Js before the end of the year, to give a fillip to what are expected to be lacklustre fourth quarter figures. IBM is expected to announce Summit on September 4, and acompany it with six 4391 models, further kickers for the 3090 and three high-end models in the 9370 line.New releases of MVS and DB2 are expected.
