IBM RS/6000 ANNOUNCEMENTS

By CBR Staff Writer

Application Visualisation System

Application Visualisation System, AVS, published and licensed by the fast-vanishing Stardent Computer Inc, is marketed through IBM’s all-embracing Cooperative Software Programme. It is a software environment that comprises several integrated subsystems, and additional modules can be developed and integrated with the base system via the AVS Network Editor. The major components are the Geometry Viewer, Image Viewer, Graph Viewer, Network Editor, Modules, Networks and Applications. The system enables the user to view data as three-dimensional geometry, two-dimensional images or as three-dimensional volumes. AVS Networks are computer programs consisting of several modules that can be stored, retrieved, modified and re-used, and visual programming can be used for prototyp ing of applications incorporating many data types. The system requires an RS/6000, 16Mb of memory and a 50Mb disk. Available now, AVS costs $4,950.

Catia Version 3 Drafting Package

The Catia Version 3 Drafting Package integrates the Catia Base, Catia Library, and Catia Drafting programs in a licensed package for the RS/6000. This licence is intended for drafting-only usage and does not authorise access to any other Catia programs under the same session. Usage is password-controlled and if Catia Base, Catia Library, and Catia Drafting codes are already installed on a given node, the Package does not require any additional application code installation. An upgrade capability to full-function Base, Library and Drafting is offered at the price differential between the Drafting Package and the three full-function programs. Version 3 Release 2 Drafting Package for the RS/6000 can be operated under the control of Resource License Manager, and a primary licence costs $5,950, while an upgrade is up to $1,620.

Higher Performance RS/6000 530H, 530E

IBM claims that the RS/6000 PowerStation PowerServer 530H system provides a new level of performance for mid-range RS/6000 deskside systems. The 530H comes with a 33MHz processor, 32Mb of memory and a 400Mb disk drive. Also, announced are model conversions for customers with installed PowerStation PowerServer 520 systems to the processor and memory technology of the new 530H, 520 to 530E, and PowerStation PowerServer 530H to 550 capability, 530H to 550E. The standard memory of 32Mb can be increased up to 512Mb in eight 64Mb memory features, and 400Mb internal fixed disk can expand to 2.5Gb in three 857Mb disk drives, in addition to 23.9Gb external storage with the attachment of four 9333 Serial Model 500 Deskside Expansion Units and three 9334 SCSI Model 500 Deskside Expansion Units for a system maximum of 26.5Gb storage. Seven Micro Channel Feature Card Slots are available for additional features like SCSI controllers and communication processors. The 530H to 550E will be available June 26, the rest are available now. The RS/6000 530H costs $31,500, an additional 400Mb SCSI disk drive is $5,600 and the 400Mb to 857Mb SCSI Disk Select costs $7,900. The 32Mb HD3 Memory Select, 16Mb to 64Mb, cost $3,280 and the 64Mb HD3 Memory Select is $4,070. To convert from the 520 to 530E is $16,500, $17,500 from the 530H to 550E.

New features and enhancements announced for some models of the RISC System/6000 family include an M-Audio Capture and Playback Adaptor that enables users to capture, digitise and play back audio signals. There is a SCSI Controller Passthrough Terminator Cable designed for uninterrupted termination of a SCSI bus shared by two host systems, and memory features for model conversion systems have been expanded to include the previous model feature numbers. The M-Audio Capture and Playback Adaptor sells for $495 and the Passthrough Terminator Cable comes in at $515.

AIX CAMKit/6000 Release 1, CAMkit/370

The AIX CAMkit/6000 licensed program is designed to provide a set of turning, milling, drilling and punch and nibble routines. Professional Cadam’s numerical control capbilities are claimed to offer part progra

mmers general-purpose programming tools, and CAMkit/6000 provides lathe, drill, punch press programming tools, family-of-parts features, and a user-tailorable tool library. CAMkit/6000 supports Professional Cadam on the RS/6000, while CAMkit/370 supports it under VM and MVS and user interactions and data structures are the same, regardless of environment. To be available from December 13, a base module primary licence costs $8,075 and the annual licence is $1,425, lathe licences are $5,950 and $1,050, the machining centre is $3,825 and $675 while licences for the sheet metal module cost $5,950 and $1,050 in the same order. CAMkit/370 annual licences are priced from $1,425 to $10,910, primary licences cost between $3,825 and $61,820, and monthly licences range from $257 to $1,970.

RS/6000 120Mb Disk File

For a limited time only, customers that have an installed RS/6000 Model 320 with a single 120Mb disk file can purchase an additional 120MB disk file for $840. The additional disk file must be ordered on or before December 31, and installed on or after October 2, 1991, but no later than March 31, 1992.
