In another of IBM Corp’s little morale-boosting announcements, the company reports that surgeons at the University of Alabama at Birmingham needed a cost-effective way to process the complex equations required to analyse the risk factors involved in heart and chest surgery, so the school’s Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery has put in an IBM 9370 to handle the arithmetically-intensive computing: the 9370 also maintains a medical journal database and will be used with IBM PS/2s as part of an experimental distributed clinical system.
