IBM Corp has some major mainframe disk announcements inked in for the fourth quarter – the announcement will likely come next month, but exactly what they will be is less certain: one school of thought looks for a brain transplant for the 3390-3 (an operation rather like the process by which new Daleks are created in the world of Doctor Who) whereby the head-disk assembly will be ripped untimely out, the 9.5 platters dumped, and a new assembly of 2Gb 3.5 disks installed in their place these will essentially be IBM’s latest 2Gb units, but may spin faster than the ones you get with your RS/6000; the move is tough on anyone that just bought a 3390-3 – or tough on IBM if it agrees to take the pain; a price of $5 or so per Megabyte is posited, as is October shipment.
