IBM PC MARKET SHARE UP

By CBR Staff Writer

Dataquest Inc was already adding up its 1993 figures for personal computer sales before the year ended, and it says its estimates indicate that for the first time since 1989, IBM Corp increased its market share as market leader worldwide: on the Dataquest charts, IBM’s market share had steadily fallen to a low of 13.1% in 1992 from 17.9% in 1989, but rose to 13.6% in 1993; it gives Apple Computer Inc an 11% share, Compaq Computer Corp boosted its share to 10% from 6.1%; the other two in the top five are NEC Corp (this is worldwide and NEC still has about half the Japanese market with the PC-9800 line) and Dell Computer Corp with 3.8% share; IBM is the clear revenue leader in the US with 16.5% of the market, while Apple had 15.5% and Compaq rose to 12.3% in 1993 from 6.2%.
