The Numerical Algorithms Group Ltd, Oxford is to take over copyright of an IBM Corp algebra program. The system provides for symbolic algebraic computation and the manipulation of mathematical expressions. The Group is a non-profit organisation formed in 1970 to develop and distribute numerical and statistical software to the academic community and says it is very pleased to be able to include this product in its portfolio, but the terms under which it gets it are not being disclosed. The program runs on the RS/6000 Unix box and other IBM systems, and the Algorithms Group will package the program as Axiom system, and plans to provide interfaces to other of its products over the coming year, most notably the Fortran Library of over 1,000 mathematical and statistical prod ucts. IBM and the Group will co-op erate on development of future rel eases aimed at further enhancements to system facilities and perform ance. Axiom is used to produce for mulae, solve equations, find numeri cal values, perform graphics functi ons, and novices can use it as a desk calculator. It has calculus, modern algebra and number theory fa cilities and a programming language for incorporating new algorithms.
