IBM is still looking for additional ways to bolster its fourth quarter business, and on Tuesday came up with another very short term special offer to encourage users to take 3090S models and be sure they have Expanded Storage fitted. The offer is a $50,000 discount on all S models apart from the 280S, the 400S, 500S and 600S, where the discount is $100,000 because these are the models most threatened by the new Amdahl 3990s. The machine has to be shipped by December 31 and installed by January 23 to qualify, and is only on new machines, not on upgrades from base models or 3090Es – again to keep competition at bay.
