Eyebrows have been raised in some quarters at IBM offering personal computers OEM (see front page), but there’s really very little new about the move: ever since the ill-fated Piccolo 8 Winchester, IBM has been quietly building OEM sales into a substantial new arm of its business, most successful so far being 3380 disk drives, used by Siemens and Honeywell Bull among others; it also has mid-range disk drives and ASCII VDUs as OEM products, so adding commodity-like items such as micros is a short step.
