Psion Plc says it will be the first company to offer a PDA running the cut-down version of IBM Corp’s asynchronous messaging software, called MQSeries Everywhere. Psion will also support the embedded version of IBM’s database, DB2 Everywhere. Psion says it will enable users to synchronize data on their PDAs with their corporate systems. Psion’s new NetBook will also incorporate IBM’s 340Mb MicroDrive.
MQSeries Everywhere was previously identified as MQLite. It will beta this quarter and can be configured to operate synchronously or asynchronously. The former is a 50Kb program. The latter is a 200Kb piece of client code which includes queue management. It can send a message to any MQSeries server. Users will be able to access the internet and corporate applications, the company says. IBM’s MQSeries development team is in Hursley, UK.
Meanwhile, Psion will offer four NetBooks; one quarter VGA, half VGA, full VGA and clam shell size. The half-VGA tablet device can be configured for barcode scanning, RF and GSM frequencies. The first NetBook and its half-VGA companion are aimed at mobile workers. They’re due by year-end. We spotted the ‘Jedi’ mini- notebook PC and ‘Quantum’ Palm PC-style versions at PC Expo last week. All machines will run the EPOC operating system and offer full enterprise Java support.
