IBM is looking for more 3380 disk and 3480 tape drive business before it brings out the expected new disk subsystems and enhanced 3480 later this year, and this week announced special offers on the products for people who at present don’t have any of the specified models at a particular site. On the 3380 J and K, it is offering a 10% discount on the price, and the discounts apply to 3380 CJ2 and 3990-1, -2 and -3 controllers where these are needed. The offer applies to customers with a volume purchase amendment for 150 or fewer drives, or no agreement; the maximum cumulative discount is 34%. Drives must be shipped by June 30 and installed within 30 days thereafter to qualify – and stay in for six months. Maximum total qualifying is eight 3380 J, K or CJ2s and one 3990. On the 3480, IBM is offering 10% on the first five 3480 Models A22 and B22 in an establishment, in addition to any volume discount, and the maximum total discount is 30%. Otherwise rules are as for the disk drive offer.
