IBM seems to be having a little trouble moving the ES/9000 580 and 620 – the three- and four-processor models that are little more than repackaged 3090-300J and 400J machines: in the US it is offering $100,000 off per processor – $300,000 on the 580, $400,000 on the 400J to users that order the machine by May 15 for installation by June 28. The allowance is on top of any other discount. The Enterprise Systems Connection Architecture Escon – fibre optic channels also don’t seem to have gone down as well as IBM hoped: it is offering users the opportunity to take Escon Converters that adapt existing peripherals to fibre channels and keep them free until December 30, when they can return them, rent them at $750 a month or buy them at then list.
