Although figures for the fourth quarter are yet to be confirmed, Dataquest suggests that the personal computer market in Spain grew 2% to 3% over 1994, well behind worldwide growth of 20% and European growth of 10.5%. Some 550,000 personal computers were sold in Spain last year, compared with 535,000 in 1993. Dataquest figures, with respect to units sold, compare the first nine months of 1994 with the same period for 1993, and show that IBM Espana SA has clearly lost a large chunk of market share, while Olivetti Espana SA’s fall in sales is explained to some extent by the disappearance of the Quaderno portable range from the market. Impressive improvements have been notched by Investronica SA, whose range of hardware was pooled with that of Informatica El Corte Ingles in March last year, and by Hewlett-Packard Co, which claims an 80% increase in unit sales and growth of 60% in personal computer revenue for 1994. The figures are:
IBM, 11.9% in 1994, with 14.7% in 1993; Investronica, 7.8%, 8.1%; Hewlett-Packard, 7.1%, 4.1%; Compaq Computer Corp, 5.6%, 6.3%; Olivetti, 5.2%, 11.1%; Fujitsu Espana SA, 4.4%, 3.1%; ADL, 4.3%, 2.2%; Apple Espana SA, 4.2%, 4.3%; ARC, 4.1%, 1.7%; Dell Computer Corp, 3.3%, 2.2%; Toshiba Espana SA, 3.3%, 2.3%; Digital Equipment Espana SA, 3.3%, 2.8%; Packard Bell Electronics Inc, 3.2%, 3.3%; Siemens Nixdorf Espana SA, 2.5%, 1.2%; Zenith Data Systems, 2.0%, 2.1%; and others with 27.9% this year compared with 30.8% last year.
The total number of units sold was 394,400, up by just 3.4% on 1993.
