IBM LAUNCHES PENTIUM-PRO-BASED SERVER

IBM Corp yesterday launched its first Pentium Pro-based server, the IBM PC Server 704, with up to four 166MHz Pentium Pros, 512Kb Level 2 cache per processor and dual PCI-bus technology in both array – with integrated RAID adapter – and non-array models. It has a total of 17 storage bays, including 12 hot-swap bays, with maximum storage capacity 25.68Gb. Memory can be expanded up to 1Gb. It initially supports OS/2 V2.11 for SMP, OS/2 LAN Server 4.0 Advanced and Windows NT 3.51 Server. The Model 4BW is a uniprocessor non-array model with 64Mb memory standard and the Model 7AX is a dual-processor array model with 128Mb memory standard and prices are expected to be about $19,000 for the Model 4BW, $31,445 for the 7AX. Both ship worldwide in May.
