IBM LAUNCHES LAN SERVER 1.2 FOR OS/2 EXTENDED EDITION IN THE UK

By CBR Staff Writer

IBM has announced that LAN Server Version 1.2 running under OS/2 Extended Edition Version 1.2 is now available in the UK. The company says that it offers several significant enhancements over OS/2 LAN Server Version 1.0 including the ability to support MS-DOS users more economically without losing any MS-DOS function, since both MS-DOS LAN Requester and LAN Support Program are included in an OS/2 Version 1.2 server licence. For PS/2 users, IBM claims that the MS-DOS LAN Requester has more space in memory for applications. Other options include the ability to run Version 1.2 on a 4M-bit or 16M-bit Token-Ring local area network, IBM’s PC Network, and Ethernet DIS Version 2.2 or an IEEE 802.3 network. The number of files available to a single server is said to be 30 times greater than before, and the user profile management permits logon to both OS/2 Extended 1.2 and LAN Server 1.2 through a single user identification or password. The file replication system enables the administrator to replicate files from an OS/2 server to another server or OS/2 requester on a time interval basis. Application programming interface support has been extended to include applications for network messaging, shared resource management, and local area network interprocess communications and security. OS/2 LAN Server Version 1.2 is available now and licences for UKP910. OS/2 LAN Server Version 1.0 users may upgrade free of charge to Version 1.2 till August 20.
