IBM Corp’s Hungarian subsidiary has launched a $29m pilot project aimed at providing low-cost computing to businesses.Hungary is the first European country where we are introducing this service, Ferenc Bati, IBM Hungary’s director in charge of the service, told Reuters. The Business Computing Utility is designed to provide a comprehensive package of business applications for firms that need up-to-date business software but have limited free capital and manpower, he said. To start with, the servers will be running Libra, a business applications package developed by Hungary’s Mikro Volan Elektronika, but plans include offering Lotus Notes and Electronic Data Interchange, he said. The service is available over leased lines or ISDN lines and will be generally available in Hungary in the second half of the year, once the tests have been completed.
