According to IBM Corp, the new version of its Virtual Array Storage System, Ramac will be up to 100% faster than the original product was when it was introduced less than a year ago. The Ramac Virtual Array Storage 2 Turbo system’s enhancements will apparently enable it to share data with more S/390 servers, and greater flexibility will mean increased productivity. The product now has shared memory capabilities to speed up operation and the number of logical channels have been increased from 32 to 128 enabling more S/390 processors to share data in IBM’s Parallel Sysplex environment. IBM has already said it intends to make further Ramac modifications at the end of August when it will increase the number of internal data paths within the Ramac 2 Turbo from four to eight. Customers who purchase the product before the enhancement will be able to upgrade if they agree to a capacity upgrade, which IBM says will enable them to take advantage of the path increase. The company is also improving other products in the Ramac family, incorporating its disk drives into the Ramac Scaleable Array 2, which will deliver up to 10,000 input-output operations per second. The Ramac Virtual Array Storage 2 Turbo will be available from April 25, priced at around $1,000 per gigabyte.
