With scarcely a television manufacturer left in the US, the American Electronics Association is increasingly worried that Uncle Sam will come nowhere in the race for the projected $40,000m world market for advanced television, including High Definition TV. Accordingly it has formed an Advanced TV Task Force, and some of the surprising names on the list of companies to be represented are IBM, AT&T, Hewlett-Packard Co and Apple Computer. The other companies are Prometrix Corp, Cohu Electronics, VPL Research, Anadigics, and BIS MacIntosh, based in Luton, here. The Association sees the technology as the last window of opportunity for the US to regain a share of the world consumer electronics market. The mee ting called to form the task force agreed that the US electronics in dustry should be in the consumer business; the technology means more to the industry than just re-enter ing the consumer market; advanced TV will drive leading edge technol ogies such as advanced semiconduct ors; an open system was recommend ed; as was a standard that would prove advantageous to US manufact urers, broadcasters and consumers.
