IBM JAPAN WINS ORDERS TO REPLACE HITACHI, BURROUGHS AND NIPPON UNIVAC MACHINES WITH 3090-200s

By CBR Staff Writer

IBM Japan may be suffering in the 3090 mainframe market (CI No 630), but the company has scored a trio of headline successes, replacing Hitachi, Burroughs and Nippon Univac machines with 3090-200s: Canon replaced a Hitachi M280-D used for a CAD system, the Amada machine tools company replaced a Univac 1100/72 and Tokyo Heavy Industries will next year replace a Burroughs B7900; IBM Japan cut the list price of the 3090 by 30% last autumn, and succeeded in landing 70 sales in November and December.
