Sales growth for IBM Corp as a whole in 1987 may come out exceedingly pedestrian (see page three), but the news from Japan is a whole lot brighter: there, IBM Japan has already done some preliminary sums and reckons that sales for the year grew a whopping 25.2% to leap through the trillion yen mark to the equivalent of about $8,800m, on which it looks for pre-tax profits of $1,000m at 130 yen to the dollar; the company puts the super performance down to rapid growth in data communications in large firms.
