IBM JAPAN GEARS TO REGAIN GROUND LOST TO NEC

By CBR Staff Writer

NEC Corp has pushed IBM Japan firmly down into the Number Two spot in the Japanese personal computer market, but IBM is not giving up without a fight. Spurred by the loss of face, the company is restructuring its small systems hardware and software development divisions and bringing them all together in one place in the Ota ward of Tokyo. The Ota centre will have development responsibility for small systems, workstations, personal computers, peripherals, and processors for small computers. The reorganisation will not be complete until March 1989, but a key feature of the new centre will be the establishment of telecommunications links to IBM research laboratories and development centres worldwide.
