Chapter and verse on IBM Corp going into deep denial on Mac OS is that senior vice-president John Thompson said at Comdex that We have no plans to work with Apple Computer Inc to create a common operating system, Personal Software Products chief Lee Reiswig said that the two were only working to increase portability of new applications between Mac OS and OS/2, and Personal Computer Co chief Richard Thoman told Dow Jones & Co that while IBM would like to provide a way for its PowerPC computers to run Macintosh programs, it doesn’t want to make a carbon copy of the Macintosh by simply licensing Mac OS, reckoning there would be little customer demand for a Mac clone from IBM and that it would want to add value; Thomain also talked to Reuters, saying that unless IBM sees customer demand for Mac OS, IBM has no plans to offer it or bundle it – Now I don’t see the customer demand, he said – We haven’t decided to do it, we have no plans to do it; there would have to be a differentiating factor, but IBM is very customer-driven, and if customers demand the Mac OS on the future IBM systems, then IBM would be willing to offer it; he said IBM is on track to launch its PowerPC-based personal computers next spring adding that they will not reach volume sales quickly but that in 1996, 1997 and 1998 they will see serious volume.
