IBM Corp today announces a new internet commerce bundle centered around its RS/6000 Unix machines, plus the availability of the RS/6000 43P with a 332MHz PowerPC 604e processor. IBM sees the 43P as a multi-purpose internet server, for web, email or firewall services. The company is now offering an RS/6000 43P with a 200MHz 604e running the new web-enabled AIX 4.3 plus IBM’s VideoCharger for $5,000. It has ditched the option of having a 233MHz version of the chip. The one new part of the bundle is Powernet, a marketing support program for IBM’s partners. The new version of AIX includes Lightweight Directory Access protocol (LDAP) and NetWare Directory Services (NDS) capabilities and IBM will have a single sign-on capability for all AIX’ services within months as a separate chargeable product, according to Tim Docherty, IBM’s program director for network solutions. There is no pricing for the 332MHz version of the 43P package.
