IBM France is reckoned to have installed 304 System/370 machines in 1988 – but only three of them were 3090s, according to several industry sources: during the year, the 3090 base is reckoned to have recorded a net gain of only three – to 314 machines from 311 in 1987; the installed base of 308Xs actually rose by 113 to 453; a net gain of 12 4381s left the 43XX installed base at 1,312; the 9370 base rose by 176 to 376; overall, the French 370 base reached 2,455 in 1988 from 2,151 in 1987, and 1,600 in 1986.
