It’s quite clear that IBM Corp really likes this virtual company idea – it started in London where some departments were reorganised so that there were far fewer desks – or work spaces – than people based there and employees had to play musical desks when they weren’t out on calls, and now it turns out that IBM reckons that property is much too expensive for it to afford to own or lease enough space for all its employees, so when it does a joint development effort, such as the one with Kalpana Inc on Token Ring, IBM engineer employees are seconded to Kalpana, so that it is Kalpana that has to pick up the tab on the space they occupy – and when they end their term of secondment, no doubt they’ll return to IBM find the building where they originally worked has been sold, and they will have to look for another nest in which to play cuckoo.
