According to Fortune magazine’s annual survey of the most highly-regarded companies in corporate America, IBM, which has held top spot for the past four years, slumped to seventh place in the 1986 poll, being succeeded at the top of the tree by diversifying pharmaceuticals maker Merck & Co.
