IBM has announced the commercial version of its Developer Kit for Linux, Java Technology edition. An alpha version of the developer kit was released through Big Blue’s alphaWorks web site back in June 1999. Suggestions made by developers who took the alpha for a test drive have been incorporated into the current version. The kit includes a Java Virtual Machine (JVM), a just-in-time compiler and a mixed mode interpreter. IBM is particularly proud of the fact that its product is compliant with Sun Microsystems Inc’s JDK 1.1.8. Sun is currently embroiled in a lawsuit with Microsoft Corp over whether Microsoft is entitled to ship its own, non-compliant versions of Sun’s Java technology.
