IBM Corp is working on a technology that would enable users to run Fast Ethernet over the vast installed base of Category 3 unshielded twisted pair wiring. Details are sparse, but it is thought to centre on new repeater technology that will combat the noise problems inherent with Category 3 wiring. On the downside, however, it is also believed to require a new brand of network adaptor specifically modified for the cabling medium. IBM has presented the technology to the IEEE for consideration as a standard, although this is unlikely to come to fruition before next year at the earliest. There is no word on when commercial products can be expected to be ready.
