IBM Corp has cornered the tennis market in the UK and the US, and will develop and operate a PS/2-based scoring and information system at this year’s US Open Tennis Championships, August 31 to September 13: the fully integrated computer system will provide spectators, competitors, news media, umpires and officials with play results and other data about the US Open; large electronic scoreboards, closed circuit TV monitors and computer terminals linked to the system will display the results as play progresses, and the system will also be used to provide other news about current and upcoming match play; a radar system to measure the speed of serves on all four show courts will be installed by IBM, but there is no mention of that other vital price of equipment for modern tennis – a grunt-meter to measure the vocal output of Ms Monica Seles.
