By CBR Staff Writer

IBM is in volume production on what it claims is the first fab in the industry to process 8 silicon wafers, at Essex Junction, Vermont – making its 1M memory chips. It can get up to 450 chips from an 8 wafer against 150 from the 5 lines. It plans to upgrade many other of its lines to 8 wafers over time.
