IBM claims that over 650 applications from 350 companies will be available for the RS/6000 by the end of September: in a rather restrained – worried? – statement, IBM says that initial market response continues to be very positive from both technical and commercial users, adding that it has shipped 2,000 systems to customers in addition to the 4,500 to software developers and internal IBM locations; the low-end models 320, 520 and 530 are shipping now in both workstation and server versions, the high-end 540 and 930 servers will ship this month and next, and the high-end graphics model, the 730, will be available in November; IBM’s Essones base in France is making the RISC chips for Europe and Santa Palomba, Italy makes the machines.
