IBM Corp, which has cut loose its disk drive manufacturing operations in Havant, Hampshire and let them go in a buyout, is effectively transferring the work to Hungary. The company announced on Friday that it is to make small disk drives for personal computers in Szekesfehervar, about 45 miles south of Budapest; production is scheduled to begin in the fourth quarter and a target of 1m drives has been set for next year.IBM said that the level of investment was not yet set and the terms of the deal were still being worked out. The manufacturing site will be a new 72,000 square foot building, and the factory will employ about 800 people, most of whom will be under contract to the Videoton-Mechatronika unit of local company Videoton.
