IBM Canada Ltd, Toronto has decided to hand the running of all its internal computer operations over to 54%-owned affliate ISM Information Systems Management Corp. IBM Canada says that combining ISM’s existing Toronto computing centre with the IBM Canada facility will result in one of the largest computing facilities in Canada. Gordon Garrett, chairman of ISM, is quoted as making the garbled comment A key component will be managing the transition of many of IBM’s internal users to a client-server environment to make information more accessible, faster and more efficiently: a key criticism of IBM is that it failed to see the computer revolution coming because so few of its senior man agers used anything other than a 3270 attached to a mainframe. IBM Canada also plans to start a new company offering networking services to Canadian business customers: it has not yet been named but will be a combination of IBM Information Network and IBM Telecommunications Services network. It will offer electronic services, Electronic Data Interchange and transaction processing, and will have a combined employee base of some 200.
