When IBM Corp launched its RS/6000 40P last year it caused a bit of a stir because it was the company’s first PowerPC Reference Platform-compliant box to come to the general market. As such, it was supposed to be able to run any operating system compliant with the reference specification – Windows NT for example. We always had a nagging feeling that it would not be quite that simple, that the machine would be tweaked in some way so it would only run AIX. We were apparently wrong. Answering a question in the Compuserve PowerPC Forum, Alan McDonley, manager, quality and configuration with IBM’s NT operation, stated that It works just fine. Insert Arc floppy, insert operating system CD, power on, press return for simple set-up, press return a few more times, enter your name, company and administrator password: 20 minutes and you are up and running.
