With no fanfare at all, IBM Corp has introduced a second iAPX-86-compatible microprocessor developed under its licence granted by Intel Corp, and is calling this one the 486SLC2, and will initially offer it as an upgrade for the PS/2 Models 56 and 57 – in the fourth quarter of this year. The part has 16Kb cache on the chip, and internal cache controller. It also uses clock-doubling circuitry so that although looking to the outside world like a 20MHz part, it operates on computer-bound work at 40MHz. It is claimed to outperform most 20MHz Intel Corp 80486SX-based machines.
