IBM Corp’s IBM Information Network has announced new IBM Mail Local Area Network Gateway/2 software, designed to enable users off disparate electronic mail services to communicate via IBM Mail Exchange, the Information Network’s worldwide electronic mail service. The Mail Local Area Network Gateway/2 resides on the local network which, the company says, simplifies system management, while an automatic registration option generates aliases for sending to local network users so that incompatible mail systems always get return addesses that they understand. The Mail Local Area Network Gateway/2 supports communications between cc:Mail, OfficeVision/400 or DisOSS with office products such as OfiiceVision/MVS, and has a planned availability of December 11. The company also says that at the end of January next year, support for Novell Inc NetWare will be added, using the Internetwork Packet Exchange protocol, and that there are also plans to enhance the gateway to support OfficeVision/VM, Profs and Lotus Notes, and migration to OS/2 2: these additions are planned for the first half of 1993. The advantages that the company is pushing are the increased number of users with which it is possible to communicate, and protection of investment in existing systems. National language support will be provided in French, Spanish, German and Italian. No word yet on pricing for it.
