IBM Corp could today give a preview of the processor that will be the building block for the forthcoming 390 Parallel Query Server and future parallel mainframes, with launch of the expected new models in the baby ES/9000 Series 9221 line. It’s not clear that there is much of a market for the things, but word on the grapevine is that IBM has lined up a 9221-191 rated at perhaps 9.2 MIPS, which is taken to use the fundamental CMOS microprocessor building block for the parallel machines. The new machines also include 201 and 211 models, said to deliver 11.6 MIPS and 13.9 MIPS respectively: are these slugged dyadic or MP models? The Model 221 sounds like a dual processor version of the 191, being rated at 15.2 MIPS, and the 421 should be a quad processor version: it is said to deliver around 25.1 MIPS.
