IBM has commissioned its first cloud data centre in India at Mumbai, expanding its global cloud centre footprint, as part of efforts to bolster its presence in the country’s cloud computing market.

The new 30,000ft2 centre forms part of the 15 cloud centre expansion, and a $1.2bn investment by IBM Cloud to bolster its cloud presence globally.

IBM India/SA Global Technology Services Integrated Technology Services director Lingraju Sawkar said: "This new Mumbai center represents IBM’s latest investment in creating the most extensive network of cloud facilities in the industry.

"Through this new center we are able to help usher businesses into the cloud era while delivering the levels of resiliency and security that allow them to experience the benefits of this new environment while ensuring they remain protected."

In addition to the new centre, IBM rolled out its new Cloud OpenStack Services via the IBM Cloud marketplace, in a bid to enable greater interoperability between existing IT systems and off-premise cloud workloads, while facilitating clients in deploying an OpenStack cloud.

A report from Gartner says that India’s public cloud services market is anticipated to reach $1.3bn in 2017 and also noted that the country would be the rapidly growing market for cloud adoption across the globe.
