IA-64 PHONEY WAR – THE NEXT CHAPTER?

By CBR Staff Writer

The IA-64 saga rolls on and on. The latest thing that Computerwire hears is that there is will be a announcement on the much hyped 64 bit architecture in late October. The event will feature the usual suspects – Intel Corp, Microsoft Corp, Hewlett-Packard Co and Compagnie des Machines Bull. At the launch of their new 64 bit Escala SMP server range, Bull was tight-lipped about what the company’s involvement with IA-64 is, other then collaborating with IBM Corp and others in porting AIX to Merced (CI No 3,503). Although one representative did say that he though it would be at least 2003 before the performance of Merced, McKinley and their siblings would trouble PA RISC users.
