I-mode phones have proved popular in Japan – the customer base has expanded to 30 million in the last three years. The service has attracted the attention of many European operators: KPN is set to launch i-mode access in the Netherlands and Belgium sometime in April.

If the deal goes ahead without any hitches, the service could be launched in Germany as early as March. When up and running, i-mode will provide customers with both German and English facilities such as news and email. The one detail that was mentioned was that Toshiba would be the initial provider of the i-mode handsets.
