Dallas, Texas-based i2 alleges that SAP has infringed upon seven patents related to its supply chain management technology. The patents in question were granted between 1998 and August 2006.

The suit was filed in a Texas district court yesterday.

We believe that it is critical to protect our patented innovations, and accordingly took these actions today against SAP, said i2 CEO Michael McGrath said in a statement.

i2 has recently been embroiled in other legal suits. In March former i2 executive Reagan Lancaster was ordered to pay $1.3m to the Securities and Exchange Commission for overstating almost $1bn of software revenue from 1997 to 2002.

The SEC determined that i2 should have only claimed only $125m of that revenue.

In a separate suit I2 paid $10m to the SEC to settle another similar suit.
