Milpitas, California-based Hyundai Digital Media Division of Hyundai Electronics America has announced an MPEG 2 decoder claimed to be the first to integrate systems, audio, and video streams on a single chip. The HDM8211M Systems, Audio, Video – SAVi – decoder is being aimed primarily at set-top decoder boxes, video CD-ROM players, digital Karaoke machines, and other multimedia systems. In addition to decoding functions, the product is also said to incorporate a graphics overlay for on-screen display of menus, and other digitally compressed data streams. The product is shipping in sample quantities now, with volume set for August. The chips will be under $60 each in 100,000 to 150,000 quantities.
