The San Francisco, California-based company has released the code for its Hyperic HQ management server, as well as the management agents, portal user interface, and software plug-ins, and set up a community site for the project at www.hyperic.org.
The code is also available at SourceForge and is available under the GNU General Public License, and will enable the platform to rapidly increase the number of technologies it can manage, according to Hyperic CEO, Javier Soltero.
Our experience as a management vendor has shown us that proprietary products have an inherent limitation: the rapid changes in the IT landscape create inevitable delays in their ability to support the management of new technologies, he said. An open source strategy solves that problem through a simple plug-in development process that allows users to develop support for emerging and custom technologies.
The release of the code as open source has also prompted the delivery of the Hyperic HQ Enterprise Subscription, which adds technical support and advanced features such as remote control, security, and policy-based management.
