Hurricane Sandy stress-tests Citrix BYOD solution

Accounting firm Frank Hirth deployed Citrix solutions for BYOD capabilities.

By Kate Heslop

Frank Hirth, a UK-US tax and accounting firm, is deploying Citrix virtualisation and mobility solutions to empower its employees to work from anywhere and on any device.

By deploying Citrix, the firm hopes to create a more agile, resilient and secure business. The solution had a surprise stress-test after Hurricane Sandy hit the country in October.

Frank Hirth opted to change its IT infrastructure and adopt a transatlantic, virtual desktop solution powered by Citrix XenDesktop.

Frank Hirth’s UK IT team developed and deployed a solution that used Citrix XenDesktop and Citrix Receiver to provide a secure, stable and effective desktop for mobile workers.

The benefits of deploying Citrix solutions includes a centralised desktop management which results in better performance and a greater stability. It provides remote workers with secure access to the systems and enables a BYOD policy, something that was unexpectedly tested by Hurricane Sandy.

In October when Hurricane Sandy hit America, Frank Hirth’s offices were inaccessible, therefore leaving the staff no choice but to use their own personal devices to access and were able to connect to the company’s system securely from home and alternative offices.

Mike Jackson, head of IT at Frank Hirth, said: "Providing a highly responsive, personalised and knowledgeable service is integral to Frank Hirth’s success. It was important to empower our employees with the right technology to do just that. Desktop virtualisation seemed the next logical step as the firm continued to expand. The ability to provide a standard desktop with dedicated resource at low cost and high availability, coupled with the ability to work from anywhere, was really compelling."
