Included in Enterprise 2005 is a new client that taps Microsoft’s popular Outlook to provide a portal into the content management system. Officials say that all of the suite’s functionality is accessible from Outlook.
However, customers will have to lift up the hood of the system to see many of the other new features and benefits. One of these is Content Drive, a technology that optimizes interactions between desktop applications and Enterprise 2005’s core content repository. It builds on Hummingbird’s network connectivity technology to control application access to databases and other IT systems. For example, file transfer operations to the content repository are managed by the native Microsoft OS kernel, which Hummingbird says obviates the need for manual coding, and bumps up performance significantly.
Enterprise 2005 also tightens up integration between the various components of the suite, using a workflow engine to link processes that span multiple tools, systems, and content sources. To this end, Hummingbird’s Workflow engine has also been beefed up with new and upgraded SOA-architecture that comes with reporting and auditing tools, search and retrieval capabilities, and a redesigned repository for information management.
