Hughes launches new broadband satellite router

On-the-move capabilities for combined mesh/star broadband satellite IP networks

By CBR Staff Writer

Hughes Network Systems, a provider of broadband satellite networks and services, has launched a new HX broadband satellite router HX280 that provides carrier-grade Internet Protocol (IP) services with security and on-the-move (OTM) capabilities

The company said that the HX280 has integrated Federal Information Processing Standards (FIPS) 140-2 cryptographic security and supports the HX System Enhanced Signaling Security feature, which is expected to protect data, management, and signalling traffic over the satellite network.

According to Hughes, the new router is configurable in any combination of star and mesh networking topologies, including simultaneous operation and is suitable for low-jitter voice, video, and data broadband IP connections.

The HX280 supports connection to IP-based networks for commercial, government, and military applications, including US Armed Services, joint operations, and Coalition partners, the company said

Rick Lober, vice president and general manager of defense and intelligence systems at Hughes, said: In designing the HX280, our goal was to build on the HX platform with enhanced security features required by the U.S. government and Department of Defense, and some of our more demanding commercial customers.

“The HX280 combines high-end secure voice and data services with on-the-move capabilities, and ensures protection of critical security parameters. It has also been designed to operate with our simplified Network Management System available later this year.
