Hughes-JVC Technology Corp, the Mountain View, California joint venture between Victor Co of Japan Ltd and Hughes Aircraft Co has developed a video projector using new image light amplifier technology that gives brighter images than cathode ray tubes or liquid crystal displays. The light amplifier uses a kind of liquid crystal that can project images even when the light source is positioned some way away, avoiding the problem of melting that plagued earlier LCD-based systems. It can be used to project high-definition television or other video images. Hughes-JVC says there is no particular limit to the brightess of the projector and is convinced it will become a market leader. It is to be released in the US this year for between $30,000 and $100,000 and will be targeted at small cinemas and companies for use in presentations.
