Under this cooperative R&D agreement, Hughes and Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA) will perform R&D that supports overall IP convergence as the basis for integrating Department of Defense SATCOM networking and information needs with the global information grid.

According to DISA, SPACEWAY 3 has been designed and developed by Hughes as a next-generation, Ka-band broadband satellite system, a commercial satellite to employ on-board traffic switching and routing capability. Combined with advanced satellite technologies such as 10 Gbps overall capacity, fast packet switching, and spot-beam forming, SPACEWAY 3 ushers in a new world of bandwidth-on-demand satellite services. It was manufactured by Boeing and is based on Boeing’s 702 satellite platform.
