Huawei partner ‘offered to sell embargoed HP gear to Iran’

In 2011, Huawei's Iranian partner allegedly attempted to sell restricted US antenna equipment to a mobile-phone operator in Iran

By CBR Staff Writer

Chinese telecommunications firm Huawei Technologies’ major Iranian partner allegedly offered to sell about €1.3m worth of embargoed HP computer equipment to Mobile Telecommunication of Iran (MCI) in 2010.

A Reuters report claims that about 13 pages of the proposal to MCI marked "Huawei confidential" carried the company’s logo.

In a statement to the news agency, Huawei called the proposal a, "bidding document" and said that one of its local partners, Sky Tech Co Ltd, had submitted it.

Rejecting claims of non-compliance with international sanctions or US export laws Huawei told Reuters, "Huawei’s business in Iran is in full compliance with all applicable laws and regulations including those of the UN, US and EU."

"This commitment has been carried out and followed strictly by our company. Further, we also require our partners to follow the same commitment and strictly abide by the relevant laws and regulations."

HP told Reuters, "HP has an extensive control system in place to ensure our partners and resellers comply with all legal and regulatory requirements involving system security, global trade and customer privacy and the company’s relationship with Huawei is no different."
