Huawei fails to hit 2014 sales target according to memo

Company lagging behind competitor Xiaomi.

By Ellie Burns

According to an internal memo seen by Reuters, Huawei has come up short in its 2014 smartphone shipments after failing to achieve the projected sales target of 80 million units.

Despite Huawei’s smartphone shipments rising by more than 40% in 2014, the failure to hit its 2014 target only highlights the success of competitor Xiaomi which overtook Samsung as the top vendor in China. Xiaomi is now expected to triple its global 60 million shipments.

The results, which are expected to be made public in the coming weeks, highlights how the competition is heating up in the smartphone market, especially with the likes of LG and Xiaomi whose growth rates are outpacing those of the industry leaders.

Due to the rise of low-cost vendors, Reuters reports that top-ranked Samsung is likely to see its shipments unchanged this year, while second place Apple could see 20% growth thanks to the launch of the iPhone 6.

Xiaomi, in comparison, sold 26 million handsets in the first half of 2014 alone, with analysts expecting sales to continue to soar.

Huawei spokeswoman Maggie Qi told Reuters that the company does not comment on internal memos.
