Huawei and Red Hat have revealed that they will be entering a partnership with each other to collaborate on OpenStack for Network Functions Virtualisation (NFV).
OpenStack, the Linux-based open source cloud computing project, has recently received a raft of attention from some of the bigger names in enterprise IT such as EMC, HP, and IBM.
Huawei also entered the fray in 2013, and is now firmly flying the OpenStack flag with this latest announcement.
Ren Zhipeng, President of Huawei’s Cloud Computing Product Line, said: "Huawei offers its customers a true carrier-grade OpenStack solution, and we are honored to expand our existing partnership with Red Hat to include collaboration on OpenStack for Network Functions Virtualization (NFV)."
Huawei and Red Hat will be targeting telecommunications carriers with their products, supporting NFV evolution. The firms plan to drive the adoption of OpenStack for NFV implementations by CSPs.
"Through open collaboration with partners like Red Hat, Huawei aims to support the business reform and transformation of the telecom industry. This partnership will focus on NFV and the development of joint solutions to foster an open, interconnected, and innovative ecosystem that supports the entire OpenStack community."
Red Hat and Huawei’s plans could put a spanner in the works for companies such as Ericsson and Cisco who enjoy a healthy share in the telecoms equipment market. OpenStack, started by Rackspace four years ago, can be scaled to better meet future demands of networks without the need to change and update technology that is expensive to redesign and adapt.
